Politics isn’t a ‘PR exercise’: John Howard on why the Liberals lost the election

Former prime minister John Howard says he doesn’t think there’s been a more “grudging” and “unwilling” change of government since World War II.

He said politics is not a “public relations exercise” and the major reason the Liberal Party lost was because it didn’t present a coherent plan for the future.

“One of the features of this last election was you might say the two most polar opposites … the National Party and the Greens, they did very well,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“The Nationals didn’t lose a seat and the Greens won seats.

“That tells you something that being identified with a clear position doesn’t really hurt you.”
