Teen Jobs: Exploitation or Experience? | Pseudo-Intellectual with Lauren Chen | 4/17/23

Work here yeah how old are you 13. oh my God has that been allowed what is that Even allowed yes 13. yeah But do you know like your multiplication Chart Oh your dad what was it that's why so I Don't know if this is even something you Guys will necessarily agree with me on And I'm pretty sure this is going to Sound terrible taken out of context but I don't necessarily support Anti-child labor laws Now The Tick Tock That we just saw is one that went viral On the platform and it shows this uh Young man probably in his early 20s Talking to a 13 year old who works at Chick-fil-A and us the kid explains his Father is actually the owner of that Chick-fil-A now this video sparked a big Conversation on social media as to Whether it is okay for 13 year olds 14 15 or 16 year olds to be working or Whether it's just another symptom of how Cruel and exploitative capitalism is now I'm gonna give my take here so like a Lot of you I didn't have my very first Work experience at the age of 18 on the Contrary when I was 14 15 16 I remember Actually working to tutor people and That was how I made some pocket money And it was a good experience and not Only taught me I guess responsibility Having to make appointments and keep

Them and keep your customers happy but It also taught me I guess the value of Hard work and how satisfying it is to Actually be able to earn your own money And have that and I think when you're a Kid and really when you're any age you Treat money differently when you've Earned it rather than when it was given To you and I think that's something that A lot of people have lost now of course There's two sides to this because Obviously I don't think anyone wants to Return to a day and age where the 10 Year olds were working 80 hours a week In a mine I don't want that I don't Think anyone wants that but I feel like Nuance is missing from this debate at Least on the side of the left because as You can imagine the left who Increasingly just seems to hate all work They've come out very strongly that know This is exploitation we have this from a More perfect union a Twitter account They describe themselves as media that Builds power for working people you see They posted that talk clip on their Twitter account they also followed up The posts with something saying Unfortunately legislation has been Proposed in several states to make child Labor more not less common they say Lawmakers in 11 states have now passed Or introduced bills to roll back child Labor laws they're trying to justify

These backwards proposals by saying Nobody wants to work but the truth is That corporations are leading this push To exploit children and they love to use That term exploit and it's funny because These same people who I'm sure are very Against anyone under the age of 18 maybe Even 21 let's be real working they have No problem shoving gender ideology Hormone blockers and yes surgery down The throats of these same people who They claim cannot really consent to work And I think what's really driving the The anti-work rhetoric here is the fact That this is obviously like some Pro-labor union account they are very Aware that if companies can actually Just get teens to do these same jobs Then their push for a higher minimum Wage it gets a lot lot harder because Obviously a teen with fewer Responsibilities to your financial Obligations is going to be more Accepting of lower pay than an adult With all these different bills that they Have to pay I I understand that that Essentially is what's driving it they Can try to wrap it up and oh we just Want to protect childhood I don't really Believe that though especially not again From these people who would gladly trans These kids and have them voting have Them be treated like an adult in every Sense except for when it can undermine

Their push for a high minimum wage and Here's the thing if you're an adult and You are worried about being priced out Of a job by a 14 year old a 15 year old Then perhaps you should probably pick up Some skills like if if you are a worker And it's like man it's mirror this 14 Year old would both be as productive but I I really hope this kid doesn't Undercut my wages like that's not good That's a symptom of a larger problem Namely you not having built up any Skills the thing is if we don't want Future people to be in that same Situation that you apparently are then Having these kids get work experience That that's a positive thing this is Actually helping them we have more to Discuss when it comes to this debate but First I do want to say thank you to Today's sponsor nefarious there's a new Movie that just released this past Weekend and I'm pretty sure you're gonna Want to see it is by these same people Who made God's not dead and unplanned It's called nefarious if you've seen the Posters or the trailer you'll agree it Looks pretty great and you see rather Than being a horror movie it's actually More like C.S Lewis screw tape letters I Like to call it interview with a demon You see a psychiatrist is called into a Prison to meet with a convicted killer Who's about to be executed the killer

Says he's a demon named nefarious and The psychiatrist who doesn't believe in God or demons he has to decide if the Man is insane at pretending to be insane Or I won't give it away but let's just Say that the psychiatrist is a little Bit out of his depth and this is a Supernatural Thriller that is going to Be perfect for your friends who love Scary films but more than that also love Going to church on Sundays you're going To have some great conversations Afterwards nefarious just opened Nationwide so get your tickets at Whoisnefarious.com that is who is Nefarious.com we talked before you know On the show about how how just terrible A lot of Hollywood is so why not go and Support a film that's actually genuinely Good and supports your values in Response to this viral Tick Tock video Showing the horrors of a 13 year old Probably mopping up floors and maybe Working the cash register other people Started weighing in saying yeah actually They've seen around their states Companies specifically advertising Toward teams including younger teams as This one person who calls themselves the Burn identity as in I'm guessing Bernie Sanders you can probably imagine her Politics she wrote Chick-fil-A is not Alone and exploiting children for cheap Labor in Iowa yes that's a real sign of

McDonald's advertising to hire 14 and 15 Year olds iOS proposed extreme child Labor bills SF 542 and hf647 were Spearheaded by the National Restaurant Association who represents fast food Companies and you see attached to this Tweet we do have a sign I've even seen This before McDonald's saying that they Are now hiring 14 and 15 year olds at 15 An hour here's the thing it is not Exploitation to offer someone 15 an hour For work in fact it's not even Exploitation to offer an adult that wage And definitely not exploitation to offer A child that way you see the economy's Been really wonky over the past several Years due to the government response to Covet and note here I'm not saying that Coveted responsible no it's the Government response to covet that is Responsible they did things they closed Businesses they gave out stimis uh Essentially they're responsible for Really high inflation and yes a lot of People just not wanting to go back to Work a lot of people have dropped out of The labor force thanks to what happened During the pandemic and we are still not At those same Workforce participation Rates I'm someone who I'm actually Literally looking right now to hire People and it's hard a lot of people They simply don't want to work because They know they can get the money simply

For staying at home you know this does Frustrate me because we should all Ultimately have the just the hard work Ethic to go out there and get a job but Also simultaneously people aren't stupid And if the government is going to be Paying them to just sit at home At a certain I can't necessarily put all The blame on them for not wanting to Expend labor simply to get maybe Marginally more than they would by doing Nothing and so the reason why companies Are are going after younger workers it Is mostly due to these government Policies if you ask me that have been Largely driven by the left and even Though the left is going to try to paint Corporations like McDonald's and Chick-fil-A evil for trying to hire Teams this is actually one of the best Things that could happen to teens right Now but you see this person the burn Identity says instead of paying livable Wages for adults more corporations are Paying their lobbyists to push for Loosening child labor laws to exploit Teens as cheap labor that's why we're Seeing more of these child labor bills At the state level like in Arkansas and Iowa it's shameful so I want to explain Here there is a big difference between Trying to hire a 14 year old and trying To hire an eight-year-old obviously an Eight-year-old not only shouldn't they

Be working but I don't think Eight-year-olds have like the the mental Capacity and responsibility where you Would be even want to entrust them to Any type of productive job but if we're Talking about a 14 year old a 15 year Old then yes these are these are Teenagers okay we're not talking about Young kids who should only really be Playing and they really shouldn't have Anything to worry about if you are a 14 Year old yes you're old enough where you Should start being introduced to limited Responsibilities like maybe an After-school job and here's the thing if You know anything about child labor laws In some of these states you'll know that It's not like oh yeah put a 14 year old Wherever okay there are laws about how Many hours per week that a kid can work Or where exactly they can work what Types of jobs and also differences Between how much during the week versus You know Summers or weekends all of that It's kind of lined out in a lot of these Laws as I think it should be there's Absolutely nothing wrong with with a Teen learning some responsibility we Already accept that kids the same age 14 15 16 that they can't be playing all the Time because they have to go to school For example because they need to learn Because education is important for the Development of people but here's the

Thing for a lot of these kids especially If these kids let's face it or going to Public school you are going to learn way More at an after-school job than you Will ever learn in the classroom okay And I mean that completely seriously I Would rather my own child be working an After-school job at Chick-fil-A or Something then sitting in some class Where they're going to be brainwashed About phony history that paints America As a bad guy or learning about 500 Different genders absolutely dead Serious this is practical education These kids are getting plus they're able To get paid for it there's not really Any downside hey since it's the internet And leftists are all over the Internet We have people like this individual who Got a surprising number of likes saying I don't care how y'all grew up a child Should not be doing any type of working Labor especially not in good service They should be enjoying their childhood Children are not tools to be exploited In the workforce those who are agreeing With this what's wrong with you I hate The idea that any type of work is Exploitation the kid here the 13 year Old and the Chick-fil-A video he's Learning a skill and not only is he Learning a skill and getting experience He's also literally getting paid so none Of this is exploitation if it comes out

That he doesn't really want to work There and his dad's forcing him that's a Different story but the leftist Narrative that work equals exploitation Is absolutely false okay we are not Talking about indentured servants okay If you're getting paid you agreed to Work it's not exploitation we also have Other enlightened leftist takes like This one here by Cindy saying we have Child labor laws for a reason because Corporations do not have the child's Best interests in mind only abuse I mean I think it's a far cry from accurate to Say that a 13 year old wiping the floor Man in cash register is akin to abuse And obviously employee labor protection Still exists they also protect kids I Don't know what they think that these Kids are going to be doing at a Chick-fil-A but I think it also goes to Show the privilege that these people Have I doubt the people who are so Against this however themselves Personally worked fast food jobs I have I worked in my University's cafeteria is It great is it glamorous snow but it's Not abuse and yes you can learn things On the job and what I find so Interesting about this conversation is It really highlights the dichotomy of How the left views children on the one Hand they want children to become adults They want them to be able to vote

Because they'll vote for their policies They want them to be able to undergo sex Change operations to engage with drag Queens go to essentially strip shows With drag queens and talk about all These different adult issues but also When convenient they want to infantilize Children to the most extreme level Possible even when we're talking about 13 14 and 15 year olds who are not Really children at least when it comes To you know responsibilities like an After-school job it just seems logically Inconsistent if you ask me to say that a 13 year old is too immature to work Behind a cash register but does have the Emotional maturity and the mental Capacity to say yes I'm all right with Permanently mutilating myself and Potential actually sterilizing myself You see like why these are not not Coherent positions I think ultimately This has nothing to do with protecting Children's Welfare all this has to do With is pushing for the drive for a Higher minimum wage a universal basic Income they're going to make it as hard As possible for more people who want to Work to actually get jobs and to be able To negotiate those jobs one-on-one with The employer because essentially what They want is the government saying Everybody is going to be getting the set Amount of money regardless of whether

You work or not and I think they see These higher and higher minimum wage Laws as a way to get that it's pretty Much all I have to say for now though And as always if you enjoyed this video Please be sure to like share and Subscribe it helps me out so so much Until next time
