Australia 'won't be bullied by any other nation'

Shadow Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews says Australia won’t be “bullied” by any other nation.

Ms Andrews’ remarks come after Chinese Ambassador Xiao Qian made an address at the National Press Club on Wednesday, warning that there would be no room for compromise on Taiwan and it would be up to Australia to mend the relationship with Beijing.

“It was very concerning to listen to the ambassador speak yesterday,” she told Sky News Australia.

“I don’t think that it will play out well here in Australia; I think that people will be very concerned about what China is doing, even more so than they have been in the past.

“Clearly, a diplomatic resolution is the best way forward for us, but Australia needs to maintain its strength.”
